About the program

The AOD Outreach and Community Engagement Program was established in response to independent reviews of the Medically Supervised Injecting Room and delivers assertive, trauma-informed outreach to people who use drugs in North Richmond. The program operates seven days per week and brings together clinical and non-clinical staff to provide holistic, community-based responses to complex needs.

About the role

As an Outreach Worker, you will provide on-foot, assertive outreach support to people who use drugs, working alongside a multidisciplinary team that includes Complex Care Coordinators, a Mental Health Worker and a Lived Experience Worker. You will play a key role in engagement, brief intervention, harm reduction, supported referrals and community connection, while contributing to projects that promote wellbeing and reduce stigma.

Key responsibilities include

• Delivering assertive outreach and community engagement using harm minimisation and trauma-informed practice

• Building rapport with people who use drugs and supporting access to health, social and community services

• Supporting Complex Care Coordinators through engagement, screening, assessment and follow-up

• Providing brief therapeutic and recovery-oriented interventions, including overdose response and crisis support

• Promoting safer drug use, the Needle Syringe Program and Take Home Naloxone

• Supporting use of the Medically Supervised Injecting Room as a safe access point

• Engaging with local residents and businesses as a positive and reliable community presence

• Contributing to events and initiatives such as National Overdose Awareness Day and World AIDS Day

• Completing accurate case notes, data collection and reporting requirements

• Participating in team meetings, supervision and service development activities

About you

You are a compassionate and capable outreach practitioner who is committed to working alongside people experiencing vulnerability and complex health needs.

You will bring

• A recognised qualification in social or human services, or a Certificate IV or Diploma in Alcohol and Other Drugs or Community Services

• Experience in outreach, harm reduction, mental health and or AOD settings

• Strong understanding of co-occurring substance use and mental health issues

• Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team

• Ability to build trusting relationships with clients and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds

• Strong communication, time management and problem-solving skills

• A commitment to culturally safe practice, including working respectfully with First Nations communities
